Industrial Fishing Near West African Marine Protected Areas and Its Potential Effects on Mobile Marine Predators

چکیده
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are increasingly implemented to facilitate the conservation of marine biodiversity and key habitats. However, these areas often less effective conserve mobile species like elasmobranchs (i.e., sharks rays). Industrial fishing near MPA borders possibly impacts vulnerable utilizing protected areas. Hence, we aimed study spatiotemporal patterns industrial fisheries MPAs, in relation bycatch elasmobranchs. Specifically, analyzed effort within West African region, mapped direct vicinity Parc National du Banc d’Arguin (PNBA, Mauritania) Bijagós Archipelago (BA, Guinea Bissau), compared seasonal overlap between elasmobranch MPAs. We combined Automatic Identification System (AIS) data local observer data, determined for each gear type this with found that was dominated by trawling, drifting longlines, fixed types. Although no observed both 72 78% buffer zones surrounding MPAs were fished Bijagós, respectively. Within zone, trawling longlines dominated, mainly being deployed fall. In gears most prevalent. Fisheries Mauritania showed catches increased during recent sampling years (2016–2018). Elasmobranch waters Bissau peaked 2016 decreased following two years. Seasonal countries likely caused migratory species. Catches rays May June Mauritania, October Bissau. Shark highest February July Mauritanian waters, Our indicates border ecologically important may have potentially major implications ecosystem functioning removal (migratory) predatory

Impacts of marine protected areas on fishing communities.
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are a popular conservation strategy, but their impacts on human welfare are poorly understood. To inform future research and policy decisions, we reviewed the scientific literature to assess MPA impacts on five indicators of human welfare: food security, resource rights, employment, community organization, and income. Following MPA establishment, food security gene...
متن کاملEffects of marine protected areas on overfished fishing stocks with multiple stable states.
Marine protected areas (MPAs) have attracted much attention as a tool for sustainable fisheries management, restoring depleted fisheries stocks and maintaining ecosystems. However, even with total exclusion of fishing effort, depleted stocks sometimes show little or no recovery over a long time period. Here, using a mathematical model, we show that multiple stable states may hold the key to und...
متن کاملContext-dependent effects of marine protected areas on predatory interactions
We studied the effects of marine protected areas (MPAs) on predatory interactions at a regional scale of 3 different islands across the geographical gradient of the Canary Islands. Protection measures positively affected predatory fish assemblages, enhancing the intensity of predatory interactions in comparison to equivalent unprotected areas (UAs), and causing indirect effects on populations o...

متن کاملMarine protected areas and ocean basin management
1. All reserve designs must be guided by an understanding of natural history and habitat variability. 2. Differences in scale and predictability set aside highly dynamic pelagic systems from terrestrial and nearshore ecosystems, where wildlife reserves were first implemented. Yet, as in static systems, many pelagic species use predictable habitats to breed and forage. Marine protected areas (MP...
